Kamembe International Airport: Gateway to Nyungwe and Lake Kivu

Kamembe International Airport – Kamembe International Airport is located 147.5 kilometers south of Kigali by air, situated in Rusizi district, with an elevation of about 5,192 feet.

It is the largest airport in this region, featuring a medium-sized runway (02/20) measuring 4,921 feet.

It was reported that during the 2008 earthquake, the airport sustained damage, but in 2010 the government announced its renovation.

By 2012, a new terminal was completed, leading to the opening of a new control tower and the installation of a navigation system by Techno Sky, a branch of the Italian publicly-owned ENAV corporation.

In 2013, during a visit by the Minister of Infrastructure, it was announced that the runway would be widened and lengthened from 1.5 kilometers to 2 kilometers.

The airport officially reopened in June 2015, and RwandAir began scheduling flights from this airport.

Currently, Kamembe International Airport receives charter flights from Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, though not on a regular schedule.

The airport is well-facilitated with state-of-the-art terminals, enhanced cargo handling capabilities of around 1,000 tons (primarily consisting of perishable goods, machinery, and equipment), streamlined immigration and customs services, and VIP lounges, among other services.

It is important to note that the airport has a single passenger terminal with basic facilities like immigration, customs, and baggage handling.

There are plans to upgrade the airport’s infrastructure, including expanding the runway, building a new passenger terminal, and increasing cargo capacity.

These developments are expected to boost trade, tourism, and the economic growth of the country.

Safety Measures

Be cautious at the airport, as some individuals may have ill intentions. It is advisable to follow the instructions given by airport employees.

If you notice anything suspicious, security personnel are always available to ensure the safety of everyone, so be sure to report any concerns.

The airport is equipped with CCTV cameras and baggage screening systems that scan all items in your luggage. Full-body scanners are also in place to enhance security.
