CANOPY WALK IN NYUNGWE FOREST – Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in the southwest of Rwanda, about 5-6 hours by road from Kigali.

This lush montane forest is home to a variety of primates, birds, butterflies, tree and plant species, and orchids.

The canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the tourist activities available to visitors, allowing them to view the forest and its habitats from a unique perspective.

The canopy walkway is the only one in the East African region, suspended 70 meters above the forest ground across a thick, forested deep valley, and it measures 160 meters in length.

The Canopy Walk at a Glance:

  • Found in Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwest Rwanda, the canopy walk was established in 2010 by USAID through Green Heart, a non-profit organization.
  • The canopy walkway is 160 meters long, divided into three sections: 25 meters, 45 meters, and 90 meters. It is suspended 50-70 meters above the forest ground, with the highest point being 70 meters at the 90-meter section.
  • The canopy walk sections are anchored on large, tall, strong forest trees above the forest canopies, giving visitors spectacular views of the forest, primates swinging among the trees, and areas around the national park.
  • The canopy walk is a thrilling and easy experience that can be done by anyone in good health aged 6 years and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • It takes about 2 hours to complete the entire canopy walk.
  • The experience begins with a forest walk/hike on the Igishigishigi Trail, which takes about an hour. The entire canopy walk tour starts with a briefing at the park headquarters at Uwinka.
  • Those hiking via the Umuyove Trail and the Imbaraga Trail on guided tours can also access the canopy walk.
  • There are four canopy walk start times: 8 am, 10 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm.
  • Visitors are advised to carry a light raincoat, a bottle of drinking water, and wear comfortable hiking shoes/boots. Do not forget your camera and, if possible, carry binoculars.

Canopy Walk Fees:

  • $40 for international visitors
  • $20 for foreign residents in Rwanda and East African Community countries
  • $5 for Rwandan and East African citizens
