Camping in Nyungwe National Park: Top Sites & Wilderness Experiences

Camping in Nyungwe National Park involves travelers sleeping overnight in wilderness tented lodges.

Since Nyungwe is a rain-forest with no accommodations inside the park, the available lodges are located outside.

This is why camping is the best option, especially if you want to save some money for snacks along the way.

The camping sites are located in various parts of the park, such as Uwinka Camping Site, which is at the reception.

The area is comfortable as tents are pinned on wooden platforms, unlike houses, as they have no walls but are covered with tops to prevent rain from causing wetness or discomfort to campers.

Campfires are set for warmth and bonding with fellow visitors, often accompanied by a hot cup of tea, wine, or a snack.

Please don’t go into the bush to relieve yourself or shower; modern bathrooms and toilets are available for such purposes.

Note that some animals, like lions (much as they are not in Nyungwe) can detect urine, so be sure to follow instructions.

The camping site is privately owned and features a standard restaurant with delicious meals, so there’s no need to pack food—just order or enjoy a meal at the restaurant.

The camping site is strategically located, as activities start from here, allowing you to save on transport fees.

Be sure to research your itinerary before setting off.

Another camping site is located at Mount Bigugu, which is at an altitude of 2,950 meters above sea level, although it only accommodates five people.

You must carry your own water here, making it the first adventure to kickstart your journey.

Camping at Congo Nile involves a divided hiking trail that takes three nights, meaning you rest at different camping sites.

Be sure to bring your camping essentials, such as a sleeping bag, mat, food, drinks, and water.

Other camping sites include:

  • Kitabi Eco Center: Located on a small mountain opposite IPRC Kitabi in Nyamagabe District, this cultural village is designed to fit every traveler’s taste, offering an angelic panoramic view. The area is well-gazetted with enough space to accommodate large groups of people. Renting a tent costs between $5 and $20, depending on whether it’s for a single person or a family.
  • Camping in Karongi District
