Irebero Trail – Behind an ancient forest canopy in Nyungwe Forest National Park, you find the Irebero Trail. The trail offers stunning views to hikers as it loops around one of the highest peaks in Nyungwe.

The trail is a catch for bird lovers, as different species, such as the handsome francolin, can be commonly spotted along the Irebero Trail.

Irebero Trail at a Glance

The Irebero Trail covers a distance of 3.6 km on a round trip with a hiking time of 3 hours. It is among the short trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park and is moderately difficult to hike. “Irebero” is a Rwandese word meaning “viewpoint.”

The name suits this trail as it offers breathtaking views of the montane forest, Idjwi Island of Lake Kivu, and as far as the first ridge in Burundi, which you can see at the different viewpoints on the Irebero Trail.

Aside from the scenic views, hikers on the Irebero Trail should expect to encounter different wildlife that inhabits Nyungwe Forest, such as some primate species, beautiful butterflies, and various bird species.

The highest elevation point of the Irebero Trail is at 2,517 m, and the lowest is at 2,407 m. It is a moderately difficult trail to trek but offers a rewarding experience with its breathtaking views.

The best time to go hiking on the Irebero Trail in Nyungwe Forest National Park is during the dry season from June to September and from December to February (a short dry spell between the wet seasons).

The Irebero Trail is much drier during the dry season.

Hiking the Irebero Trail will cost you $15 for a half-day and $25 for a full day per person per hike.

The hike on the Irebero Trail starts at 9:00 am and at 1:00 pm every day, starting and ending at the Uwinka Visitors Center. It is a loop trail around some of the highest points in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
