Isumo Waterfall Trail | Nyungwe Forest Hike

ISUMO WATERFALL TRAIL – Isumo Waterfall Trail takes hikers to the tallest and biggest waterfall in Nyungwe Forest National Park, the Isumo Waterfall, which is 17 meters tall. The waterfall trail can be hiked by anyone in good physical and mental condition, as it is considered to be moderately challenging.

Beautiful scenic views of the tall Isumo Waterfall, various butterfly and bird species, different plant species, tea plantations, and some primates that inhabit the vibrant Nyungwe Forest can all be seen during your hiking expedition on the Isumo Waterfall Trail.

Isumo Waterfall Trail covers a distance of 10.6 km on a round trip with a hiking time of 4 hours.
The Isumo Waterfall Trail is named after the scenic Isumo Waterfall that hikers will be able to see during their hike along this trail. “Isumo” is a Kinyarwanda word for waterfall.
The highest elevation point of Isumo Waterfall Trail is at 1,940 meters, and the lowest is at 1,770 meters.
Beautiful wildflowers, mosses, tree ferns, and lichens are abundant on the Isumo Waterfall Trail because of the high humidity, making for vibrant different shades of green scenery.
Expect to encounter some primates like the colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, different bird species, and butterflies along the Isumo Waterfall Trail.

The best time to go hiking on the Isumo Waterfall Trail in Nyungwe Forest National Park is during the two dry seasons from June to September and from December to February (a short dry break between the wet seasons). The trail is much drier and less muddy and slippery.
