BUHORO TRAIL – The Buhoro Trail is one of the two shortest hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park and the shortest trail starting from Uwinka. Unique sightings of different species of turacos, tree, and plant species can be experienced during your hike on the Buhoro Trail. It is a popular trail among visitors/trekkers in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Buhoro Trail at a Glance
- The Buhoro Trail covers a distance of 1.8 km with a hiking time of 1.5 hours.
- The highest elevation point of the Buhoro Trail is at 2,450 meters, and the lowest elevation is at 2,386 meters.
- This short trail is a walk in the park and is one of the easiest hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
- There are greater chances of spotting turacos along the Buhoro Trail during your hike, commonly the Great Blue Turaco and the Black-billed Turaco.
- Noteworthy tree and plant species along the Buhoro Trail include East Africa Yellowwood trees, Usambarensis, Ocotea, large Lobelia, and Strangler Figs, among other vibrant species.
“Buhoro” is a local Rwandese dialect word meaning “slowly.” The Buhoro Trail is an easy trail to hike; therefore, take it slow and enjoy what the trail has to offer every step of the way. Just carry enough drinking water with you and enjoy the natural environment and its freshness.
- There are chances of encountering the black and white colobus monkeys during your hiking experience on the Buhoro Trail.
- The dry season is the best time to go hiking on the Buhoro Trail when the trail is much drier, from June to September and the dry months of December, January, and February. Otherwise, you can hike the Buhoro Trail any time of the year.
Going on a hike via the Buhoro Trail will cost you 15 US dollars for a half-day and 25 US dollars for a full day per person per hike. The cost includes the hike park guide fee.
The hike on the Buhoro Trail can be done any time throughout the day, every day, starting from Uwinka Reception Center.
