CYAMUDONGO SECTOR OF NYUNGWE – The Cyamudongo sector is one of the sectors located in Nyungwe Forest National Park. It is situated in the western part of the park and is one of the major areas for the famous chimpanzee trekking experience carried out in Cyamudongo Forest.
Cyamudongo Forest is an isolated part of a lush dense forest in Nyungwe Forest National Park, covering an area of only 19 km². This forest inhabits one of the three habituated chimpanzee groups that visitors to the park can trek for a chance of seeing the human-like apes in their natural habitat.
The habituated chimpanzee group in the Cyamudongo sector is made up of 30 individuals that can easily be seen at the edges of the forest, making this group easier to trek than the habituated group in the main Nyungwe Forest. It is actually the most visited chimpanzee-habituated group in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Other than the chimpanzees, the Cyamudongo sector is also home to other primate species like the L’Hoest’s monkeys, mona monkeys, and colobus monkeys. It also shelters different bird species, beautiful butterflies, and orchids, including the rare purple orchid (Polystachya bruechertiae), which is not found in the main Nyungwe Forest.
