The trail goes through Nyungwe Forest National Park’s biggest wetland, the Kamiranzovu Marsh, which is a sight to marvel at as you hike the trail. At some viewpoints, you can have a clear view of the entire lush marsh from higher ground.

The Kamiranzovu Marsh is said to be the last place where the last elephant of Nyungwe Forest National Park was sighted, thus the name “Kamiranzovu,” where “Kamira” means swallow and “nzovu” means elephant. Basically, the swamp swallowed the elephant.

Kamiranzovu Waterfall Trail gets its name from the vast Kamiranzovu Swamp/Marsh. It is a good trail for bird lovers, as they get a chance to spot different bird species of Nyungwe Forest, including swamp dwellers like the Albertine Owlet and the Grauer’s Rush Warbler.

The dry season is the best time to go hiking on the Kamiranzovu Waterfall Trail, from June to September, and the short dry season of December, January, and February.

Hiking Kamiranzovu Waterfall Trail will cost you 15 US dollars for a half-day and 25 US dollars for a full day per person per hike.

The hike on Kamiranzovu Waterfall Trail is carried out at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm every day, starting from either trailhead 1 or trailhead 2, which are just 0.7 kilometers apart. The trek is shorter from trailhead 1.
