Karamba Trail – Karamba Trail in Nyungwe Forest National Park is among the hiking trails in the forest famous for its excellence in providing a rewarding birding experience.

Karamba Trail is a western hiking trail that was formerly a gold mine, a stone quarry, and an army base.

With this much human activity in the area, the natural environment was degraded, but with the eradication and control of human activities along the Karamba Trail, the natural environment is recovering steadily.

Colorful orchids can be seen on this trail, and big giant trees line the forest margin.

Karamba Trail covers a distance of 4 km on a return trip with a hiking time of 3 hours.
The highest elevation point of Karamba Trail is at 2,030 meters, and the lowest elevation is at 1,935 meters.
The open habitats of Karamba Trail make it the best trail for bird lovers as it makes spotting the beautiful bird species of Nyungwe Forest easier. Notable birds along the trail include the African broadbill, bush shrikes, the white-bellied robin chat, yellow-eyed black flycatchers, and the blue-headed sunbird, among others.
The Karamba Trail has good traction and is relatively flat, making it an easy trail to hike in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

The dry season is the best time to go hiking on the Karamba Trail when the trail is much drier, from June to September, and the dry months of December, January, and February.

During the wet season, the Karamba Trail becomes a small stream of clear water because it doesn’t drain much.

Going on a hike via the Karamba Trail will cost you USD 15 for a half day and USD 25 for a full day per person per hike.

The hike on Karamba Trail starts at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm every day, starting from the army camp.
