The Kitabi Receiving Center is one of the three receiving centers of Nyungwe National Park, along with Uwinka and Gisakura Park Headquarters. It is a booking office located on the park’s eastern boundary.
Both cash and credit cards are accepted at the Kitabi Visitors’ Center. The center accepts reservations for those interested in the Nature Walk and Canopy Walk Tours at Uwinka. Surrounded by Mount Kitabi, it provides one of Rwanda’s most breathtaking panoramic views, showcasing dark green trees of Nyungwe Forest, terraced farms perched on seemingly endless hills, light green tea plantations, and an apparently endless sky. To fully appreciate this, you have to visit the Kitabi Reception Center.
The center offers a distinctive and varied track that takes you into the forest. It departs at set times with a required guide and allows you to ride a bike. Kitabi serves as the starting point for the seldom-used Ngabwe route, but it’s a challenging base to get to without a car because it’s far from Nyungwe’s main attractions. The Kitabi College of Conservation and Environment Management is also located here.
The most reasonably priced housing options are available near the Kitabi Visitors’ Center. One such option is Nziza Eco Lodge, a wonderful mid-range hotel featuring a lounge, free WiFi, and a barbecue.
In addition to taking a nature walk around the Kitabi Visitors’ Center, Nyungwe National Park offers a variety of other activities, such as hiking trails through the forest, chimpanzee trekking, tracking Colobus monkeys, bird watching, canopy walks, and viewing the Isumo waterfall.
Situated around 225 kilometers southwest of Kigali, Nyungwe Forest National Park takes four to five hours to reach by car. Alternatively, domestic flights from Kigali to Kamembe can be made via helicopter. In addition to Nyungwe Forest, guests can extend their stay by going to Volcanoes National Park, where they can go golden monkey viewing or undertake gorilla tracking. This park is home to some of Africa’s largest primates.
