Gisenyi Rubavu: Rwanda’s Town on Lake Kivu – History & Activities

Gisenyi – Rwanda’s best-kept secret, Gisenyi, is seated on the shores of Lake Kivu, weaving a tale of hope, natural beauty, and cultural heritage.

It is the second-largest city in Rwanda, extending to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with several hotels and beaches famously known for water sports.

Gisenyi is a sister city to Goma and came into existence due to an eruption on Mount Nyiragongo that flowed down the slope to form a platform.

Luckily, in 1977 and 2002, the lava that flowed did not reach the two amazing towns, saving the people. Recently, low-density expansion has been taking place in the hills to ensure the safety of residents from future eruptions.

Gisenyi is of great importance, sustaining a variety of businesses, such as the manufacturing of local beers by Bralirwa, which produces Primus, Mutzig, Amstel, and Guinness, as well as a range of Coca-Cola-branded soft drinks.

The area is developing at a faster rate than its sister city Goma in the DRC, despite its small size. In 2011, the main roads of the town were paved, with side roads nearing completion.

Although Gisenyi is small, it has significant value to those who appreciate its charm. It has two border crossings with Goma, which include the Petite Barrière and the Grand Barrière.

About 6,000 people crossed the Petite Barrière in 2011.

A large customs and immigration office was built in Gisenyi, with a capacity not yet matched by the Congolese facilities.

The Grand Barrière, paved on both sides, receives more heavy truck traffic.

Historically, Gisenyi was a site where part of the Rwandan genocide took place.

It is also said to be the location where Laurent Nkunda, accused by the United Nations of leading an army that illegally recruited Congolese child soldiers, operated.

Despite this difficult history, the town has an educational side, and in the 2012-2013 academic year, over 3,413 students were enrolled in various programs.

Gisenyi also has over 30 public and private schools, including nursery, primary, and secondary schools.
