Silver Monkeys – In the aftermath of Rwanda’s devastating genocide, the forests were left scarred and fragmented.
However, amid the ruins, a symbol of hope emerged when silver monkeys were still found, adorned with silvery coats and white cheek patches.
Silver is a rare and unique color, and the monkeys that possess this color are seen as special creatures residing in the tall trees of Nyungwe Rainforest.
Scientifically known as Cercopithecus doggetti, these monkeys are also commonly sighted in other African countries, such as Uganda in Kibale National Park.
The same species can be found in central to southern Asia, particularly in areas of India, where they are considered a subspecies of blue monkeys.
Only recently were they classified as a distinct species, characterized by narrow noses and septums, cheek pouches, hard patches of bare skin on their buttocks, two large premolars in each half of the jaw, and close-set nostrils that are directed forward or downward.
Silver monkeys are generally more active during the day and take naps in the trees, much like other monkeys in their fantasy world, where a dominant king gets first access to food, shelter, and water.
Monkeys groom their infants as a family, creating a strong bond within the species. Every female takes full responsibility for the young ones, even if they are not their own.
Interestingly, it’s the females who initiate courtship with the males if they want to mate.
Females have a gestation period of five months, after which a single offspring is born, and infants are weaned after six months.
Both females and males reach sexual maturity at the same time—around three years of age.
Life is precious, and these species live long compared to some other animals.
An elderly silver monkey can live for 20 to 25 years.
They are naturally folivorous or frugivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, and small insects.
Although they sometimes come down to the ground, this is not often, as they are sensitive creatures.
Any loud noise or scare can prompt them to hide.
